Map Missoula

An Initiative of Missoula County

Missoula County has initiated a five-year, multi-stage project to improve place-based information accessibility and provide accurate data to decision makers. Map Missoula builds upon the Missoula County Property Information System and is:

  • Enhancing access to recorded land documents (i.e. deeds, surveys, mortgages, etc.).
  • Displaying historical maps, images, and other media (i.e. audio, etc…) on a digital platform.
  • Provides a publicly accessible web-portal for information about current and historic property information in Missoula County.
  • Making county operations more efficient and policies more reflective of our county's goals.

By the end of this five-year endeavor, Map Missoula will be the most comprehensive and  accessible source of property information for Missoula County while also providing valuable historical and cultural context and resources.

Map Missoula will be complete by the Summer of 2025, however, ongoing releases and new features are being published regularly.

Property Information

Missoula County currently hosts the most advanced cadastral system in Montana. Map Missoula aims to build on the Property Information System by connecting current parcel information to 150 years of records held by the Missoula County Clerk & Recorder.

Property Information System

Affixing real estate records to the property they impact will provide a one-stop portal for the public and private audiences. For Missoula County, Map Missoula will help to streamline governmental processes and provide more complete information to decision makers. From a landowner’s perspective, Map Missoula will make information about their property accessible with one “click” and simplify the process of working with their local government.

Culture & History

Through collaboration with community partners, Map Missoula provides a platform for imagery, art, cartography, oral traditions, and other media that are geographically tied to the landscape. Displaying these materials in this innovative fashion increases the reach of these materials while providing context and relationships across otherwise independent collections.

Each waypoint in Map Missoula holds unique, interactive information about Missoula’s heritage which allow the users to explore other initiatives, such as the Montana Memory Project, with the click of a button. Ranging from aerial imagery and historic photography to georeferenced maps and oral history archives, Map Missoula’s culture & history layers offer a journey through Missoula’s past while working to engage our community in today's decisions.

Current Progress

For the fourth year in a row, Missoula County was awarded a Montana Geospatial Information Act (MGIA) Grant. This grant is the primary funding source for Map Missoula efforts and enables County staff to map historic documents on file with the Clerk & Recorder's Office to parcels. Map Missoula Cadastral

The first three years saw great success in gathering historical content and collaborating with community partners as well as establishing the necessary technology and procedures to map the 1.4 million documents on file with the Clerk & Recorder.

By 2025, all recorded deeds will be mapped and the Property Information System will be enhanced to include 150 years of property history.

These historic tracts of land are important in understanding how current property boundaries were created while providing accurate and comprehensive information to decision makers. These efforts have already helped to streamline Missoula County processes related to land-use and subdivision review.

Map Missoula is currently available through the “Themes” tab of the Property Information System. Historic and cultural waypoints can be explored by toggling different layers with the Map Missoula theme.
