Each year, Missoula County provides local organizations with grant funding to support projects that serve the county’s most vulnerable citizens.  Grants and Community Resources staff are responsible for administering competitive application processes for county grant funds and managing contracts for projects that support county priorities.

Alcohol Tax Fund

Missoula County receives Alcohol Tax Funds from the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. At the beginning of each fiscal year, the state allocates earmarked alcohol tax monies for the provision of substance misuse/abuse treatment and prevention services.

To be eligible for funding, applicant organizations must be designated as a state-approved substance use disorder provider, and have either not-for-profit status or be a governmental agency.

Eligible program areas include:

  • Prevention services
  • Substance Use Disorder treatment, including outpatient, residential home, inpatient, and detox

Designated state-approved Substance Use Disorder providers are notified of the funding opportunity in the spring.


Childcare Provider Training Fund

The Childcare Provider Training Fund provides support for comprehensive training and support services to early-childhood service providers in Missoula County for the purpose of sustaining and improving the quality of childcare available to Missoula County families. 


Community Assistance Fund (CAF)

Each spring, Missoula County conducts a competitive application process to award grants from its Community Assistance Fund to support programs that provide basic needs assistance to at-risk populations in Missoula County. Priority is given to projects or services that provide food, medical services, shelter and emergency transportation to at-risk and homeless populations. Eligible entities are not-for-profit organizations or governmental agencies that provide basic needs assistance to at-risk or homeless populations in Missoula County.

Mental Health Fund 

The Mental Health Fund supports an emergency mental health system capable of providing crisis intervention and stabilization services to children and adults. 

Eligible entities are 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations or governmental agencies that provide crisis mental health services in Missoula County in one or more of the following ways:   

  • Offer emergency crisis stabilization services to children or adults;  
  • Provide emergency crisis intervention services to children or adults.

Rural Grant Program

The Missoula Board of County Commissioners created the Rural Grant Program to support community-driven projects that enhance the quality of life in the rural areas of Missoula County. The program includes two unique funding opportunities: Micro Grants, with awards between $100 and $500, and Impact Grants, with awards over $500 and up to $4,000.  


NACo Identification and Health Discount Programs

In partnership with Human Resource Council, Missoula County administers a program to assist low-and-moderate-income individuals with the cost of identification cards, birth certificates, and driver licenses.  As a member of the National Association of Counties (NACo), Missoula County is able to offer its residents the benefits of NACo’s Live Healthy Program.


Substance Abuse Prevention Mill Levy (SAP ML)

In 2008, voters approved a mill levy to support underage substance abuse prevention efforts in Missoula County. Each spring, Missoula County conducts a competitive application process to award approximately $368,920 in substance abuse prevention mills to support programs in Missoula County that help grow healthy youth and families and reduce the negative consequences and high costs of substance abuse.

Eligible entities are not-for-profit organizations or governmental agencies that provide underage substance abuse prevention services in Missoula County in one or more of the following ways: 

  • Maintain a coalition that coordinates substance abuse prevention efforts;
  • Provide community education about the risks and costs of abusing alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs;
  • Offer supervised non-school hour activities that give young people alternatives to drug use and opportunities for positive youth development; or
  • Provide early intervention to help youth and families address alcohol, tobacco, and other drug problems.
